Experience
Hi. I'm a retired university professor with more than four decades of experience in research, writing, and teaching. I tutor (actually, I think of what I do more as mentoring....but more about that below) in the following skill areas: 1. all aspects of research - design, clarification of concepts and measures, data collection and coding, data analysis (qualitative as well as quantitative/statistical), interpretation and logic of inference, and developing effective summaries of findings. In this area I work with graduate students and upper-division (junior/senior) undergraduate students in any field of the social sciences. I also welcome opportunities to work with young professionals who find themselves called upon to do demanding research for which they don't have specific training. 2. cross-cultural adaptation in educational and other professional settings.....I've had the good fortune of living outside the US for one-third of my adult life; have taught at four European universities, and held research professorships at three other international institutions; and had the privilege of serving as executive officer of a large global organization with members in 60 countries. I understand from both personal experience and observation how difficult it can be to parachute into an unfamiliar cultural setting and be expected to perform well from the beginning. I really enjoy working with international students and other professionals, helping them adjust to a new cultural environment. [Please note that I do not tutor in specific courses, but rather focus more broadly on all aspects of cultural adaptation.] 3. communicating effectively....in addition to helping with the written presentation of research, I am happy to work with university students and working professionals on public speaking skills. I'm proud to be able to report that my colleague and I twice won the National Debate Tournament as undergraduates at Northwestern. My teaching has received awards at three universities. I really prefer to think of this as mentoring, rather than tutoring. Mentoring implies a lasting interest in the success of people I work with. I'm committed to getting to know you, and to following your success long after our work together right now has been wrapped up. If you recognize that what we think we know depends very much on how we discover it, you know the value of doing quality research. If you are convinced that discovery that is not communicated effectively, in writing and verbally, is a huge waste of society's resources, you are someone who will make significant contributions to the lives of people around you. And if you see adaptation to a very new cultural environment as a temporary challenge, not an enduring obstacle, you are capable of turning your international origins into one of your greatest strengths. If you identify strongly with any of those thoughts, it would be a privilege for me to meet you. Let's talk.
